Rental allowance

If you are renting an independent student apartment (independent means your own facilities like kitchen and bathroom), you may be eligible for rent allowance. 

Where can I apply for rental allowances?
 At www.toeslagen.nl, the website of the Dutch tax office (Belastingdienst) or call the Dutch tax office on 0800-0543. Please be aware that the tax office will only reply in Dutch. 

How to apply for a BSN number?
BSN is a Dutch personal identification number. To obtain this number, you need to register yourself at the Municipality or at the Dutch tax administration. Please have following documents available when you apply:

Documents required for obtaining a BSN for non-EU citizens:

• proof of identity (passport, driving license not allowed)
• proof of local address (copy of rental contract)
• employment contract (if available)
• residence permit / work permit; (if applicable)
• proof of registration with the ‘Gemeente’ (Dutch Municipality, at the local cityhall) 

Documents required for obtaining a BSN for EU citizens:

• proof of identity (passport, driving license not allowed)
• proof of local address (copy of rental contract)
